Translate the subscription states before writing conditions

Lemon Squeezy distinguishes stopping future payments from ending a subscription. Its documentation describes cancelled subscriptions as valid until the current billing period ends, while expired subscriptions have ended. It recommends retaining product access for every state except expired, including during payment recovery.

For an illustrative design-asset app, write a short access policy that customer support can explain. A person who cancels their monthly subscription should see when their existing access ends. A person whose renewal needs attention should see an appropriate billing message. Those experiences require more information than a paid-or-unpaid boolean.

Store provider identity beside the customer workspace

Create a durable relationship between your own workspace and its provider subscription identifier. Keep the current status and relevant period dates with that relationship. Treat email as a contact detail that can change, rather than the only key connecting a purchase to customer work.

Before accepting a plan identifier or workspace reference from checkout, establish how the server validates it. In the design-asset example, one purchaser may manage both a personal workspace and a studio. An event should update the intended workspace instead of granting every account with a matching email the same benefits.

Choose lifecycle events without provisioning twice

Lemon Squeezy documents that order_created accompanies subscription_created for a subscription purchase. It also provides subscription_updated for changes and separate payment events. Assign a specific job to each event your integration receives instead of treating every successful-looking message as a new subscription.

For example, subscription creation can establish the provider relationship, updates can refresh the local lifecycle record, and payment events can contribute billing history. Make provisioning safe to repeat. The initial order and subscription notifications should not create two studio accounts or send two independent welcome sequences.

Verify a webhook before changing access

Use the documented signing procedure to verify incoming webhook requests with your signing secret and the original request body. Lemon Squeezy supplies an X-Signature header. Preserve the bytes required for verification before a JSON parser or framework transforms the body.

The developer guide describes acknowledging successful receipt and retrying unsuccessful deliveries. Make the acknowledgement correspond to reliable acceptance of the work. Keep a record of processing outcomes so a retry or manual replay can be investigated without guessing whether access was already changed.

Rehearse cancellation through the end of the period

Create a test customer and record the expected lifecycle before sending events. Exercise purchase, cancellation, the remaining access period, and expiration. At each stage, check a protected download or editing action as well as the account settings page. A correct status label does not establish that the underlying permission changed correctly.

Add a repeated notification and an interrupted processing attempt. Confirm that the workspace is still connected to one subscription, that access follows the current provider record, and that support can explain what happened. Use the provider's available test-mode tools rather than altering a real customer's renewal merely to test a handler.

Make the end of access understandable

Decide what customers can still do after expiration, such as view account settings or export work under your stated policy. Keep billing recovery separate from destructive deletion. An expired subscription should not silently trigger an unrelated data-retention decision.

Lemon Squeezy is worth evaluating with this full lifecycle in view. The practical acceptance criterion is that a customer can purchase, cancel, use the eligible remaining period, and understand what happens next. Document who investigates mismatched provider and application records before the first support request arrives.
