Which email platform should you choose?
Start with one repeatable email job: an opted-in product newsletter, a short welcome sequence, or a customer education campaign. Both Brevo and Mailchimp are candidates for email marketing. Choose after checking the actual audience, editor, automation, integration, and reporting requirements rather than assuming the lowest advertised tier includes your intended workflow.
For a small SaaS, the comparison should end with a quote and a working sample journey. A platform with the right editor but an unsuitable audience model can create ongoing cleanup work. Conversely, a cheaper send allowance has limited value if a required trigger, teammate, or integration moves the account to another tier.
Count stored contacts and planned sends separately
Brevo's current quota documentation includes both stored-contact limits and email-related allowances. It describes stored-contact limits for Starter and Standard that depend on the selected email plan. Avoid the blanket claim that storing contacts is always unlimited or irrelevant to a Brevo purchase.
Mailchimp documents subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed, cleaned, pending, archived, and deleted states. In its current contact guide, subscribed, unsubscribed, and non-subscribed contacts count toward the monthly contact limit; several other states do not. Billing status and permission to send marketing are separate questions. Use the rules for your actual account and plan, including any legacy terms.
| Input | Record for Brevo | Record for Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Stored audience | Applicable stored-contact quota | Applicable billable contact count |
| Campaign volume | Selected send allowance and limits | Selected send allowance and limits |
| Automation | Required trigger, steps, and plan | Required trigger, steps, and plan |
| Team access | Required roles and seats | Required roles and seats |
| Other messaging | Separate product or channel requirements | Separate product or channel requirements |
Use a fictional newsletter to calculate the workload
Suppose a fictional SaaS has 1,200 eligible newsletter subscribers and plans four broadcasts in a month. That represents 4,800 recipient sends before welcome messages, tests, resends, or other campaigns. If 100 new subscribers each receive three welcome messages, the illustrative total becomes 5,100 sends before those other additions.
Keep unsubscribed or otherwise non-marketable records separate in the inventory, then apply each vendor's current counting rules. These figures illustrate workload arithmetic; they are not vendor plan prices, observed delivery results, or a traffic forecast. Do not assume every stored record is eligible to receive the campaign.
Test one complete automation before migrating the list
Use a harmless test subscriber to enter a welcome sequence, change a relevant preference, and leave the intended promotional path. Confirm the trigger, delay, destination link, and exit behavior. Check how the plan handles an existing subscriber entering again so that an import or repeated form submission does not start unintended duplicate messages.
For migration, inventory fields, tags or lists, suppression states, forms, integrations, and sequence rules. Inspect a small sample before moving the full audience. Preserve the meaning of each status and define when the old system stops sending. Rebuilding a visual sequence does not prove that every trigger and subscriber state transferred correctly.
Is Brevo always cheaper than Mailchimp?
No general price winner follows from the headline allowances. Compare the current quote for the same contact inventory, send volume, automation, teammates, and additional channels. Include the billing interval, overage behavior, and maintenance time. A free starting plan and a paid workflow are different comparisons.
Does moving platforms improve email delivery?
A migration alone does not establish better inbox placement. Evaluate sender configuration, audience quality, content, sending patterns, and the provider's actual feedback for your use case. Distinguish API acceptance, delivered messages, clicks, and useful product actions. This guide reports no comparative deliverability benchmark or customer acquisition result.
Sources and editorial method
Official product sources linked throughout this guide were checked on October 29, 2026. Comparisons and fictional exercises are editorial analysis, not hands-on benchmarks or customer results. Product versions, plans, quotas, and interfaces can change. Confirm current documentation before choosing a plan or implementing a workflow.
