Which pricing entry model should a solo founder choose?
Choose the model that lets a suitable customer evaluate the outcome while keeping delivery supportable. A trial limits evaluation time, freemium supplies an ongoing limited plan, and a lifetime deal exchanges an upfront payment for an explicitly defined continuing entitlement. None is a universal acquisition shortcut. Model the obligation before choosing the headline offer.
Match access to the natural evaluation task
A calendar-based trial may end before a monthly reporting task occurs. A small usage allowance may support a better evaluation if the output can be reviewed immediately. A lasting free plan makes sense only if its delivery and support burden have a sustainable role in the business. State whether a payment method is required, what usage is included, and what happens at the boundary.
| Structure | What the buyer receives | Founder question |
|---|---|---|
| Time-limited trial | Evaluation access until a stated date | Can the person reach value within this window? |
| Freemium | Continuing access within stated limits | Can the business sustain inactive and heavy free accounts? |
| Lifetime offer | Defined entitlement after an upfront payment | Which ongoing costs and commitments remain after cash is spent? |
Run a lifetime-deal stress calculation
Consider a fictional 120-unit upfront payment, 12 units of initial delivery costs, and 3 units of monthly ongoing variable cost. The remaining 108 units covers 36 months of that variable cost if usage stays constant. Fees, support time, fixed costs, refunds, and taxes are excluded, so this is a simplified exposure calculation, not a profitability estimate. Higher usage shortens the interval. A product that relies on paid AI calls needs explicit usage assumptions.
Write terms around what you can deliver
Explain the product, supported features, usage allowance, support, upgrades, cancellation or refund conditions, and any service-continuity terms. Do not use lifetime language while hiding a different meaning in a footnote. Have relevant terms reviewed for the places where you sell. The pricing-page guide helps make the customer commitment visible; it does not supply a universal legal contract.
Compare outcomes before widening the offer
Record relevant trials, completed tasks, paid adoption, continued use, and support effort separately. A large free signup count may mask an expensive evaluation path. A burst of upfront cash does not create recurring revenue. Review the retention workflow and the metrics definitions before drawing conclusions from a small cohort.
