Wispr Flow alternatives

Compare Superwhisper, MacWhisper, Aqua Voice, Willow, and Monologue as Wispr Flow alternatives by offline use, privacy, platforms, and pricing model.

What do you need to change?

People usually look past Wispr Flow for one of three reasons: they want dictation that keeps working without a connection, they would rather pay once than subscribe, or they want stricter handling of what they say. Superwhisper and MacWhisper can transcribe with local models on your own machine, and both offer a one-time licence. Willow and Monologue state that dictation is not retained by default. Aqua Voice is a like-for-like cloud alternative aimed at people who dictate prompts and technical terms.

Five alternatives to consider

Voice dictation apps

Superwhisper

Consider Superwhisper when you want unlimited free dictation with local models that work offline, and cross-platform apps with optional cloud AI.

Voice-to-text for macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android that can run local models offline, with custom modes that reformat what you say.

Pricing model
The free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models and up to two modes. Pro, paid monthly, yearly, or once for a lifetime licence, adds cloud models, AI modes, and file transcription; new users get 3,000 words of Pro features.
Before choosing
Offline use depends on local models, which run best on Apple Silicon Macs; AI formatting beyond the local message and mail modes needs a connection.
Voice dictation apps

MacWhisper

Consider MacWhisper when you work on a Mac, also transcribe files or meetings, and prefer a one-time Pro licence to a subscription.

A Mac app for transcribing files, meetings, and app audio with local models, which also includes system-wide dictation.

Pricing model
A free version, and a Pro licence bought once with lifetime updates rather than a subscription.
Before choosing
Dictation is only in the version sold on its own website, not the Mac App Store edition, and AI dictation prompts need Pro plus your own OpenAI API key; check which features you need are in the free version.
Voice dictation apps

Aqua Voice

Consider Aqua Voice when you mostly dictate prompts and technical terms and want a cloud app on the same four platforms.

Voice dictation for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android that pastes text at your cursor, with features aimed at prompting coding agents.

Pricing model
A free plan with 1,000 words. Pro adds unlimited words and a personal dictionary, Max adds realtime mode and voice commands, and Business is priced per seat with SSO and zero data retention.
Before choosing
The free allowance is 1,000 words in total, enough for a short test; zero data retention is listed on the Business plan only.
Voice dictation apps

Willow

Consider Willow when zero retention of audio and transcripts by default matters, and you work on Mac, Windows, or iPhone.

AI voice dictation for Mac, Windows, and iPhone that writes into any text field, with zero retention of audio and transcripts by default.

Pricing model
A free plan with unlimited dictation on a smaller speech model and limited use of its Scribe writing feature. Pro is priced per user and adds its most accurate model; Business adds enforced zero retention and HIPAA compliance.
Before choosing
The free plan uses a less accurate model than Pro, so test accuracy on the paid model before deciding; processing runs on its US cloud infrastructure.
Voice dictation apps

Monologue

Consider Monologue when you live on Apple devices and want dictation alongside voice notes your AI tools can read.

Dictation and voice notes for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, with bot-free meeting notes and MCP and API access to your notes.

Pricing model
A free trial with 1,000 dictation words and 10 recorded notes, including offline transcription. Pro is a monthly or annual subscription with unlimited dictation and notes across Apple devices.
Before choosing
It runs on Apple devices only; dictation audio and transcripts are not stored on its servers, but saved notes are kept in your account.

When Wispr Flow may still fit

Keep Wispr Flow on the shortlist when you need the same app on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android, and its free weekly allowance or per-user Pro plan fits how much you dictate. Cloud transcription is part of the design, so it is not the right choice for offline work.

Its data controls page says transcription always happens in the cloud, so it needs a connection; review the data-sharing setting before dictating sensitive material.

Before you switch

  1. Dictate the same paragraph with names, jargon, a list, and a mid-sentence correction into each candidate, and count the edits needed.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi and test again, then read each provider's data page to see where audio and transcripts are processed and stored.
  3. Check every device you dictate on, and price a month of your usual word count on each plan.
