Figma alternatives

Compare Penpot, Sketch, Lunacy, Framer, and Uizard as Figma alternatives by open source, offline work, seat pricing, and handoff.

What do you need to change?

The usual reasons to look beyond Figma are the cost of paid seats as a team grows, wanting design files you can host or keep offline, and work that is really website building or quick mockups rather than full product design. Penpot answers the first two with an open-source tool you can self-host. Sketch and Lunacy are desktop apps that work offline, and Lunacy is free. Framer and Uizard fit narrower jobs: publishing websites and generating mockups.

Five alternatives to consider

Design tools

Penpot

Consider Penpot when you want an open-source, browser-based design tool with a free cloud plan or a self-hosted server you control.

An open-source design and prototyping platform, available in the cloud or self-hosted, with layouts based on CSS grid and flexbox.

Pricing model
The cloud Professional plan is free and fully featured. Paid cloud plans add storage, longer history, and enterprise administration, priced per editor or per member. Self-hosting the open-source edition is free.
Before choosing
Rebuild one real component with its variants and tokens before moving a design system; check that the features your team relies on in its current tool work the same way.
Design tools

Sketch

Consider Sketch when your designers work on Macs and want a native app that works offline, with free browser access for viewers and developers.

A native Mac design app with real-time collaboration, prototyping, and a web app where viewers and developers inspect designs for free.

Pricing model
A 30-day free trial with no card required, then a subscription per editor; viewers and developer handoff are free. A one-off Mac-only licence with a year of updates is also sold, without collaboration features.
Before choosing
Editing needs a Mac (macOS 15 or newer); confirm everyone who designs uses one, and that others only need the free browser access.
Design tools

Lunacy

Consider Lunacy when you need a free desktop design app for Windows, macOS, or Linux that opens existing .fig and .sketch files.

A free desktop design app for Windows, macOS, and Linux with cloud collaboration, built-in graphics, and support for .sketch and .fig files.

Pricing model
Free for personal and commercial use. Optional subscriptions add more cloud documents and version history, team features, and built-in graphics without attribution.
Before choosing
The free built-in graphics need an attribution link in your work, and free cloud use is limited to ten cloud documents; check both against how you work.
Design tools

Framer

Consider Framer when the design work is mostly websites you want to publish directly, with a CMS and hosting in the same tool.

A website builder with a design canvas, CMS, hosting, and an AI design agent, for designing and publishing sites without handing off to developers.

Pricing model
A free plan publishes to a Framer domain with a small AI credit allowance to try. Paid site plans add a custom domain, CMS collections, more bandwidth, and monthly AI credits; additional editors are paid and viewers are free.
Before choosing
It is for websites rather than app interfaces; if you design product UI for developers to build, test that workflow before moving to it.
Design tools

Uizard

Consider Uizard when non-designers need clickable mockups quickly and AI generation from prompts or sketches is more useful than precise design tools.

An AI-assisted tool for mockups, wireframes, and prototypes that generates screens from text prompts, screenshots, or hand-drawn sketches.

Pricing model
A free plan with two projects and three AI generations a month. Paid plans add more projects and generations, private projects, and developer handoff in React and CSS; viewers and commenters are free on every plan.
Before choosing
It is aimed at fast mockups rather than detailed design systems; check whether exported React and CSS are good enough for your developers.

When Figma may still fit

Keep Figma on the shortlist when several people design in the same files, you rely on shared libraries and Dev Mode, and your developers already inspect designs there. Its free Starter plan is limited to three files, so a small team may simply need to price the paid seat types it actually uses.

Seats are priced by type; list who needs a Full seat, who only inspects designs (Dev), and who only comments before estimating cost.

Before you switch

  1. List who designs, who only comments, and who only inspects for development, then price each candidate's seats or editors for those groups.
  2. Rebuild one real screen with its components, variants, and auto layout or flex layout, and check how much has to be redone.
  3. Ask a developer to inspect that screen in each candidate and export its assets, then compare what they can copy into code.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Figma?

Penpot has a free, fully featured cloud plan and can be self-hosted for free, and Lunacy is free for personal and commercial use. Framer and Uizard have free plans with limits, and Sketch has a 30-day trial rather than a free plan.

Is there an open-source Figma alternative?

Penpot. Its source code is published under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and it can be self-hosted with Docker or Kubernetes or used in Penpot's own cloud.

Which Figma alternative works offline?

Sketch and Lunacy are desktop apps that let you work in local files without an internet connection. Sketch runs only on a Mac; Lunacy runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Can I open Figma files in another design tool?

Lunacy's documentation says it opens .fig files as well as .sketch files. In our judgment, check a complex file with components and auto layout before relying on any conversion.
