Cursor alternatives

Compare Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf), GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Zed, and Cline as Cursor alternatives by model access, editor, and billing.

What do you need to change?

Most people reconsidering Cursor have one of three concerns. Its plans are now part of a subscription that also covers Grok and X, and Claude, GPT, or Gemini usage is charged separately at API rates. Others want to stay in their current editor, or prefer an agent they can run with their own keys. Devin Desktop is the closest like-for-like editor; GitHub Copilot works across many existing IDEs; Claude Code bundles Claude models into one plan; Zed and Cline let you bring your own keys.

Five alternatives to consider

AI coding tools

Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf)

Consider Devin Desktop, the renamed Windsurf, when you want another AI-first editor with frontier models from several providers inside the plan quota, and an easy import of your Cursor settings.

Cognition's AI code editor, renamed from Windsurf, with an agent command centre for running several coding agents alongside the full IDE.

Pricing model
A free plan with a light agent quota, limited models, and unlimited Tab completions. Paid plans add frontier models from several providers within a quota that refreshes daily and weekly, with extra usage at API pricing; team plans add a per-seat charge.
Before choosing
Quotas refresh daily and weekly and cost per message varies by model; run a typical day's work before relying on the included allowance.

GitHub Copilot

Consider GitHub Copilot when you want to stay in VS Code, Visual Studio, a JetBrains IDE, Xcode, Neovim, or Eclipse, and your code and reviews already live on GitHub.

GitHub's coding assistant and agents, available in many editors, the terminal, and on GitHub itself, including pull request review.

Pricing model
A free plan with 2,000 completions a month and limited chat and agent use; a free Student plan for verified students. Paid individual plans include a monthly allowance of GitHub AI Credits, which agent mode, code review, the CLI, and cloud agents consume, and extra credits can be bought.
Before choosing
Agent mode and code review draw on AI credits rather than a request count; estimate how much agent work you do before picking a plan.
AI coding tools

Claude Code

Consider Claude Code when Claude is the model you rely on and you would rather drive an agent from the terminal or your IDE under one Claude plan.

Anthropic's agentic coding tool that reads a codebase, edits files, and runs commands from the terminal, an IDE, the desktop app, or the browser.

Pricing model
Included in Claude's paid individual plans and in Team and Enterprise seats, but not the Free plan. Its usage draws from the same limits as your Claude chats; paid plans can add usage credits at standard API rates. It can also be used with an Anthropic Console account instead of a plan.
Before choosing
Terminal work and chats draw from one usage pool with five-hour and weekly limits on most plans; check whether heavy sessions need a higher plan or usage credits.
AI coding tools

Zed

Consider Zed when you want a fast, open-source editor that is free to use with your own API keys or external agents, and AI that can be switched off entirely.

An open-source code editor written in Rust, with an agent panel, edit predictions, and real-time collaboration, for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Pricing model
The editor is free for personal use, including unlimited AI use with your own API keys or external agents. Pro adds hosted models and unlimited edit predictions with a small monthly token allowance, then bills tokens at API list price plus 10%. Business is per seat; there is a 14-day Pro trial.
Before choosing
Business does not yet offer SSO, SAML, or SCIM according to its pricing page; confirm this if your team needs them.
AI coding tools

Cline

Consider Cline when you want an open-source agent that approves each step and works with any provider, including local models, paying only for inference.

An open-source coding agent, licensed under Apache 2.0, that runs as a VS Code extension, a CLI, a desktop app, or an SDK, with any model you choose.

Pricing model
Free for individual developers; you pay only for AI inference, either through your own API keys or Cline's provider. Enterprise adds the JetBrains extension, SSO, centralised billing, and team controls at custom pricing.
Before choosing
Costs depend entirely on the model and how much context each task sends; set a spending limit with your provider before long runs.

When Cursor may still fit

Keep Cursor on the shortlist when you are happy to work mainly with its own models, want cloud agents, automations, and Bugbot review in the same product, or already have a legacy Cursor plan that still suits you.

The entry paid plan covers Cursor's own models only; if you rely on Claude, GPT, or Gemini, price that usage separately at API rates.

Before you switch

  1. List the models you actually use in a week and price them under each candidate: in a plan pool, at API rates, or through your own keys.
  2. Run one real task end to end in each candidate, from reading the code to a passing test, and keep the diffs to compare.
  3. Check the team features you need, such as SSO, admin model controls, and privacy settings, on the specific plan you would buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Cursor?

Cline is free and open source, and Zed is free for personal use; with both you pay your model provider directly through your own API keys. GitHub Copilot has a free plan with 2,000 completions a month, and Devin Desktop has a free plan with a light agent quota and unlimited Tab completions.

Which Cursor alternative works in JetBrains IDEs?

GitHub Copilot supports JetBrains IDEs as well as VS Code, Visual Studio, Xcode, Neovim, and Eclipse. Claude Code also has a JetBrains integration. Cline lists its JetBrains extension under its Enterprise plan.

Can I use Claude or GPT models in Cursor without paying API rates?

On Cursor's current plans, third-party models such as Claude and GPT are not part of the included usage pool; they are billed at API list price from prepaid credit on Premium and above, and are not available on Free or Plus. Legacy Cursor plans work differently, so check which plan you are on.

Which Cursor alternative is closest to switching like for like?

In our judgment, Devin Desktop, the renamed Windsurf: it is also a desktop AI editor with completions and an agent, and its onboarding can import VS Code or Cursor settings. GitHub Copilot in VS Code is the other short step if you mainly want to keep your existing setup.
