ChatGPT alternatives

Compare Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Mistral Vibe as ChatGPT alternatives by usage limits, cited sources, app integration, and data controls.

What do you need to change?

Most people who look past ChatGPT have a specific complaint: they keep reaching limits on the work they do most, they need answers they can trace back to sources, or they want an assistant inside the apps and accounts their organisation already uses. Claude suits long writing and document work, Perplexity puts cited sources first, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot sit inside Google and Microsoft 365, and Mistral Vibe offers a European provider with private deployment options.

Five alternatives to consider

AI assistants

Claude

Consider Claude when your work is long documents, careful drafting, or code, and you want projects and connectors to your apps; its usage limits reset every five hours and every week.

Anthropic's AI assistant for writing, analysis, research, and coding, with projects, Artifacts, and connectors, plus Claude Code on paid plans.

Pricing model
A free plan with usage limits that reset every five hours and every week. Pro, Max, and Ultra raise those limits, with Max and Ultra offering several times Pro's usage. Team is billed per seat for 2 to 150 people, with standard and premium seats; Enterprise combines a seat price with usage at API rates.
Before choosing
How quickly you reach a limit depends on the model, chat length, and file size, and Opus models and Claude Code need a paid plan; test a typical long session before choosing a tier.
AI assistants

Gemini

Consider Gemini when your email and documents live in Gmail, Docs, and Drive, or you already pay for Google storage, since its paid plans bundle storage with AI features.

Google's AI assistant in the Gemini app and across Google products, with Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, and Gems on the free plan.

Pricing model
A free plan with a Google Account. Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra raise usage limits, add more capable models and Gemini inside Google apps such as Gmail, and include cloud storage. For organisations, Gemini comes with Google Workspace plans billed per user.
Before choosing
The free plan uses Google's lighter Flash-Lite model, paid plans are offered country by country, and work accounts need a qualifying Workspace edition; check what applies to you first.
AI assistants

Perplexity

Consider Perplexity when most of your questions are research, and you want every answer to cite its sources inline so you can check them.

An AI answer engine that searches the web and cites its sources inline, with a choice of models from several AI companies on paid plans.

Pricing model
The free Standard plan has practically unlimited basic searches but very few Pro Searches, and Perplexity picks the model. Pro adds extended Pro Search, a choice of advanced models, and image and video generation; Max raises limits further. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max are billed per seat, and the API is pay as you go.
Before choosing
Pro Searches are very limited on the free plan and advanced models are not included, so judge Perplexity on the Pro plan if model choice or file analysis matters to you.
AI assistants

Microsoft Copilot

Consider Microsoft Copilot when your documents, email, and meetings are in Microsoft 365, and you want help inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Microsoft's AI assistant, available as a Copilot app and built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.

Pricing model
A free version of Copilot chat has lower usage limits. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family add Copilot in the Office apps with higher usage, Premium adds extensive usage and features such as Researcher and Analyst, and Pro has the highest limits. Business plans are billed per user, with usage-based billing for some advanced AI features.
Before choosing
On Microsoft 365 Family the AI features are for the subscription owner only and cannot be shared, so each person who needs Copilot may need their own plan.
AI assistants

Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)

Consider Mistral Vibe, formerly Le Chat, when you would rather use a European provider, or your organisation needs on-premises or private-cloud deployment.

Mistral AI's assistant, formerly called Le Chat, combining chat, research, documents, and a coding agent for the terminal, IDE, and web.

Pricing model
A free plan with limited messages, web searches, and coding sessions. Pro raises limits and includes monthly API credits, with a discount for verified students; Team is billed per user. Enterprise adds private deployments, SAML SSO, and audit logs.
Before choosing
Older guides still call it Le Chat. Deploying on-premises or in a private cloud is an Enterprise option, not part of the Team plan.

When ChatGPT may still fit

Keep ChatGPT on the shortlist when you use several of its tools together, such as voice, image creation, deep research, and Codex, and its free plan's unlimited everyday text chats cover most of your use. Check the training opt-out in your data controls before sharing work material.

Go may include ads. On Free, Go, Plus, and Pro your content can be used to train models unless you opt out, while ChatGPT Business does not use your data for training.

Before you switch

  1. Write down the five tasks you use ChatGPT for most, and run each one in every candidate with the same prompt and files.
  2. Check each candidate's data controls: whether chats are used for training on your plan, and how to opt out or move to a business plan.
  3. Use each free plan for a normal working day, note when and where you reach a limit, then price the plan that would remove it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to ChatGPT?

Yes. Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Mistral Vibe all have free plans, with different limits: Claude resets usage every five hours and every week, Gemini's free plan uses a lighter Flash-Lite model, and Perplexity's free plan has practically unlimited basic searches but very few Pro Searches.

Which ChatGPT alternative cites its sources?

Perplexity is built around search, and its answers include inline citations you can open. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Mistral Vibe can also search the web, so in our judgment Perplexity is worth choosing when checking sources is the main thing you do.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

In our judgment neither is better across the board, and both change with each model release. Claude suits long documents, projects, and coding with Claude Code on paid plans; ChatGPT bundles more tools, such as image creation, voice with video, and Codex, into its plans. Try your own tasks in both before paying.

Which ChatGPT alternative works with Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?

Microsoft Copilot works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, and Gemini works inside Gmail, Docs, and other Google apps on paid and Workspace plans. Claude also offers Claude for Microsoft 365 on paid plans. In our judgment, start with whichever suite already holds your documents.
