What counts as a competitor to a micro SaaS?
Any workable way a buyer finishes the same task is an alternative: another app, a spreadsheet, a shared document, a contractor, or leaving the task undone. Compare the complete workflow and the cost of changing it. A missing feature in a large product is a research lead, rather than proof that customers want a standalone subscription.
Start from a recent task
Write the input, steps, result, participants, and failure points from an actual consented interview or your own clearly labeled demonstration. For a fictional client-brief checker, distinguish collecting answers from assessing whether those answers contain enough detail. A form tool may solve collection well, leaving little reason to replace it. The opportunity, if any, may be a review step that fits the existing process.
Use primary documentation before making comparisons
Notion documents forms connected to databases. Airtable documents form submissions becoming records in a table. Those facts establish existing collection workflows, not that either product is better for your customer or lacks a feature you have not inspected. Check current plan limits, permissions, and exports in the official documentation, then test the exact workflow before publishing a comparative claim.
Build a comparison you can audit
Keep verified facts, hands-on observations, and assumptions in separate columns. Include switching work: importing history, retraining clients, maintaining links, and recreating permissions. Mark an unknown as unknown. The worked rows below are fictional research prompts, not vendor test results.
| Alternative | What to inspect | Evidence still needed |
|---|---|---|
| Existing form plus manual review | Which missing details require follow-up? | Observed anonymized brief and reviewer notes |
| Shared document template | How do clients understand each question? | Consented task walkthrough |
| Proposed checker | Does its output reveal a useful omission? | Side-by-side sample and correction log |
Turn the findings into a build or positioning decision
If the workaround already delivers the result with little effort, investigate a different problem or a smaller integration. If customers repeatedly identify the same unresolved step, test that step before building the whole replacement. Use the validation guide for the experiment. For a public alternatives page, follow the comparison-page guide and give readers enough current evidence to evaluate your conclusion.
